Today you’ll hear sample answers to IELTS Part 1 questions about smiling and laughing.

What a joy it was to record today’s video! Positive topics are always more pleasurable to discuss.

If you get questions such as these on your exam, seize the opportunity to show your positive expressiveness through your intonation.

You can practice this by watching and listening to my sample answers, pausing, and trying to mimic the way I express myself.

Recently, a YouTube subscriber asked me how to answer IELTS questions about smiling. This, naturally, connects to another IELTS Speaking Part 1 topic about laughing.

As you watch today’s video, please note any interesting words or phrases that you hear, and add them to your vocabulary notebooks.

IELTS Part 1 question: Why do people smile?

In my answer, I use the words intrinsic and extrinsic.

Intrinsic is motivation that comes from inside you, whereas extrinsic comes from outside yourself.

IELTS Part 1 question: When do people smile?

I used the word sardonic to mention a negative cause of someone smiling.

Sardonic means the reason of smiling is due to another person’s negative situation, so this person is perhaps mocking another person or idea.

IELTS Part 1 question: When do people laugh?

As stated in my answer, I watch a lot of stand-up comedy. You can find many clips of stand-up on YouTube, or full routines on Netflix.

This is an excellent way to learn about humor and culture in your target language of English.

IELTS Part 1 question: Do you enjoy making other people laugh?

You can use the same phrase as I did to close my answer to this question: There’s nothing I love more than making other people laugh.

Before you practice answering these questions, brainstorm specific, personal examples to include in your answers. Then, answer out loud, and, remember, stay positive!
