Students are very worried about their Grammar score for Speaking and Writing.

Let us help!

Firstly, don’t panic about the need to use a wide variety of sentence structures.

The fact is, you can just use a couple complex sentences, a few compound sentences, and get a 6 or 7 for Grammar.

The difference is in the number of errors. For a Grammar 6, you have a variety of structures, but still quite a few mistakes.

A 7 for Grammar connotes a sentence structure variety (but not a huge variety), but many of those sentences have no mistakes.

For most students, getting a 7 for Grammar is just not in the cards, especially if you only have a couple months to prepare for IELTS.

That’s why we say it is a more intelligent use of your time to focus on improving your score in the other categories:

For Writing:

Having said that, using some conditional phrases is a great way to present the examiner with complex sentence structures!

Conditional Example Sentence for IELTS:

Zero Conditional

This is used for facts and possible situations. If + present simple + independent clause

What time do you get up in the morning?

If I set my alarm, I wake up at 6:30. If I forget, I don’t wake up until 10 a.m.

First Conditional

This is used for possible situations when the outcome is likely. If + present simple + independent clause with ‘will’

What will you do when you finish your studies?

If I get my Masters Degree, I will move to the UK.

Second Conditional

This is used for an imaginary situation. If + past simple + independent clause with ‘would’

What is your ideal vacation?

If I could go anywhere, I would choose Italy. I would rent a motorbike and travel around the whole country with just a backpack.

The third conditional utilizes the past perfect, and you don’t need to know that. Even native speakers rarely use it!

Could you write example sentences about yourself using today’s structures?
