Today you’ll learn the steps to overcome IELTS Reading panic on your next exam.

There’s been a theme lately to student messages we’ve been receiving.

For example:

I still make mistakes in reading practice. Should I move on to writing practice, or should I stick to reading? I read a lot of books and newspapers, but it’s more about strategy and clearly understanding the tasks.

Another student asked about not being able to get her score above a 6.5.

What’s the issue here?

First, you need to learn the reading strategies, such as those in 3 Keys IELTS, which have led many students to get a 9 on Reading.

Remember also that your extra reading is not for the Reading Exam- it’s for vocabulary and ideas for Speaking and Writing.

If you’re panicking about your IELTS Reading practice, take a step back.

Step 1: Do reading quizzes from other sources

Do reading quizzes on other sites that are not IELTS. We recommend The Guardian articles with questions, and also the reading quizzes on English Club.

Step 2: Deal with anxiety

There are a number of techniques in 3 Keys for dealing with anxiety.

Find one that works for you and practice using it.

For instance, take 30 seconds to a minute and focus on your breath. Feel it in your nostrils, chest or stomach. This gets you out of your head.

5 breaths engage your autonomic nervous system.

Step 3: Apply new attitude to IELTS

2-3 weeks before your exam, refocus on IELTS Reading practice.

Do this in a challenging environment such as a noisy cafe or city park.

Use your new techniques to deal with anxiety.
