Today you’ll learn impressive transition phrases to talk about positives and negatives.

We had a fabulous question from a student in our course Facebook group:

Can I use ‘worse yet’ instead of ‘according to’ in problem solution essays?

For example, “Oxycodone causes respiratory problems. Worse yet, it causes death due to respiratory depression.”

First of all, ‘according to‘ is not used in that way. It is used to introduce a source, such as, “According to the New York Times, ...”

That’s great to introduce specific examples and proof.

However, ‘worse yet‘ introduces an additional, and worse, consequence or negative idea.

The student’s example is perfect.

These phrases can go after a period or a semi-colon, or a comma as seen below.

  • worse still
  • what is worse is

Lindsay used great phrases for the Speaking Exam: “It’s not all doom and gloom” and “On the flip-side“. These are great to transition from negatives to positives.

Linking phrases for additional positive ideas include:

  • better yet
  • better still

I am excited because I get to go for a walk with my friend, and, better yet, I get to record with Lindsay.
