Even though politics is not exactly an IELTS topic, questions about laws and governments do occur in Speaking Parts 2 and 3, as well as Writing Task 2.
A student in our course asked about phrases to use in these cases, which inspired this episode.
The phrases we’ll provide today came directly from the New York Times– the newspaper you should be reading to learn really impressive vocabulary and high-level ideas.
8+ Politics Vocabulary
a person cast him/herself as a … – this person presents a specific image of himself; playing a role that they want to be seen in
“Trump cast himself as a defender of values.”
clash– an extreme disagreement; fight (noun or verb)
“A clash of civilizations.”
rebuke- scold; tell someone they are doing things wrong

“Trump rebukes the media.”
(This term could be used in discussing parenting and education as well.)
hospitable– make someone feel comfortable; make people feel welcome
“The country was hospitable toward the foreign leader.”
(This word could be used to describe having guests in your home.)
rhetoric– language; descriptive words
“The rhetoric spouted by Trump seemed to suggest…” “The speech was full of positive rhetoric towards the host country.”
(‘Rhetoric’ could be used in discussing language and education.)
Some questions in which you could use these phrases have to do with healthcare, parenting, laws, government, news and media and education.
