Question 1:

If I make a mistake while I’m speaking during the Speaking Test, can I quickly correct myself by saying, “Sorry, I meant to say…”? Is that acceptable?

This can be handled strategically for higher scores.

After all, native speakers do this all the time. You can use native phrases to correct yourself, so the examiner hears fluent communication and also understands that you know the correct way to say something.

For example, you can say, “I’m so sorry, that is not what I meant to say at all, actually…

IELTS is a test of your natural communication, and using these phrases to correct yourself shows this ability.

Lindsay and I have been talking about a strategy of ‘narration’ and being honest on the exam to increase your Fluency and Coherence scores.

Question 2:

Can I show some emotion on the Speaking Exam like laughter and excitement and even crying?

Well, laughing and excitement are fantastic. You must show emotion in your voice to get a 7 or higher for pronunciation.

Question 3:

How can I speak grammatically correct? It’s difficult to think while speaking. How can I improve that?

Stop focusing on grammar! It takes most students a year to improve their grammar by a band point, especially in speaking.

Focus on the categories you can improve- Fluency and Coherence, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation.
