Today, we answer a question about specific sentences that may decrease your IELTS Writing scores.

In our closed Facebook group for our course 3 Keys IELTS, a student asked a question recently. She had some worries due to reading IELTS blogs and forums.

She wrote:

There are several IELTS blogs that say to not write, “In this essay, I will…” as a sentence. But, in this course, your template consists of this type of sentence. I am in doubt. Could you make this clear?

If you see advice like this online, or in an IELTS course, you need to ask the person giving this advice a question. How this would bring down your score?

If the person cannot explicitly link their recommendations to the scoring system, do not trust them.

As to this student’s question, first take a step back. Do you think one single sentence, let alone one single phrase, is going to bring down your writing score?

No. No it will not.

In fact, there is nothing in the scoring descriptors that says anything related to using this phrase.

What you can do is to look at the function of this phrase, and try to use higher-level vocabulary to express the same idea.

Templates and outlines tell you what pieces have to be there. Then, it is your responsibility to bring your writing to the next level with exciting vocabulary and specific ideas.

Here, for instance, you could say, “In the following composition, I intend to explore…

This phrase the student is talking about is from the thesis statement, which must be in the essay.

If you listen to this episode with our student Patricia, you will see how a high-level writer takes our advice and uses it to write a really high-scoring essay.

In sum, you must find an IELTS professional that you trust. Don’t waste your time on resources or tutors that do not link their advice and practice to the IELTS scoring system.
