In today’s show, I talk to Meghan Jenkins about a study technique called Mind Wandering. Make your prep more productive!

How many hours are you spending studying IELTS?

Do you feel like all of these hours are productive and useful? Perhaps not. Studying too much actually can decrease your IELTS scores!

In Meghan’s career as a massage therapist, she has been continuously learning about mind-body connections.

Meghan treats some very high-level athletes, such as ultra-runners.

Their training and preparation is comparable to yours as an IELTS candidate. When you are constantly studying and your brain is overworked, your brain is in flight or fight mode too often.

This puts your whole body and mind in a state of high anxiety. This is not healthy, and does not increase your scores.

Mind Wandering

Your brain needs to recharge, just like your body. It needs to rest.

This technique allows your brain to relax, or “space out”, and lets it be free. The brain can only actively retain information for about 30 minutes at a time.

So, every 30 minutes, close your computer. Put your phone away, on silent. Close your books.

Just sit there, with no external stimulation or sound.

Stare off into space, and just let your mind go where it wants for 2 to 5 minutes.

After this short period of time, your brain will get bored of doing this, and it will actually want to return to actively working.

Think about this like putting gas in your car. Your brain needs to recharge, and refuel!

I can honestly tell you that I’ve been doing this while I’m working, and this short meditation has really helped me be productive!
