Today we talk about the 5 biggest mistakes that will kill your IELTS Speaking score.

Pay attention today and take notes!

Don’t be one of the millions of students who make these mistakes every IELTS exam!

Don’t sound like a robot

This isn’t a job interview, it’s more like a conversation. Focus on that fact, because you must remember to be yourself.

Bringing yourself into the IELTS Speaking test, showing your personality, will raise your Fluency and Pronunciation scores.

Don’t treat the whole Speaking test as ‘formal’

IELTS Speaking Parts 1 and 2 ask you to informal, personal questions. So, using only academic vocabulary here would be awkward and inappropriate.

This means that your expressions could be more informal, like slang and idioms, in Parts 1 and 2, but more formal and academic in Part 3.

However, don’t be too informal either!

Don’t be too relaxed and cool!

Yes, this is more like a conversation than a job interview. But it’s not a conversation with a dude in a bar.

Never give one word answers, like ‘yeah’. Informal vocabulary, yes, but never informal grammar.

In Speaking Part 2, Do Not Follow the Bullet Points

If you concentrate on these while planning and speaking, it will actually lower your score.

Listen to this episode to find out how.

Don’t Use Only Easy Linking Words

You must use a variety of transition phrases, besides ‘and, but, because’.

Use pronouns for reference.

In Speaking Part 3, use formal linking words as in Writing Task 2.

Record yourself speaking and use your lists of vocabulary and linking words while you speak. Then listen and check!
