Today is our first real student consult! And it’s all about Speaking and Writing.ielts speaking part 3 writing task 2 clear

Do you have issues communicating in an organized, specific way, in IELTS Writing Task 2 and Speaking Part 3?

Laura, from Columbia, is a 3 Keys IELTS student. She was the first to sign up for her live consultation with me.

The problems that she shared are very common to IELTS candidates, and many of you surely can identify with her worries.

Writing

  1. Laura’s first question was about her sentence length. She has gotten feedback saying that her sentences are too wordy, and too long.

My advice?

Follow the Writing Task 2 essay template in our course. It gives you all the transition words/phrases you need for a high-scoring, organized essay.

2. Her second issue is related to the first, and this is that her body paragraphs are too long.

My advice is to START TIMING the essay practice. In order to force yourself to stick to the recommended word limit (250-280 words), and finish the essay in 40 minutes, you must start challenging yourself. Time yourself and start training your brain to communicate more succinctly.

3. Laura has also found that she takes too long brainstorming.

I reminded her to only take notes, and never write complete sentences. Also, she needs to always check back to the question and make sure her ideas are all directly on topic.

Speaking

Laura’s main concern had to do with Speaking Part 3. She feels she goes off topic and repeats herself.

My advice is to prepare differently, step-by-step.

a. Write out your Speaking Part 3 answers.

b. Proofread for off-topic ideas and repeated vocabulary.

c. After you have grown confident with steps a. and b., start practicing answering the Speaking Part 3 questions in a mirror.

d. Finally, go into the closed Facebook group in our course, and find speaking partners.
