Today you’ll learn 3 things on IELTS Speaking to not worry about, and what you should do instead!

Speaking can be the most angst-ridden part of the IELTS Exam.

Having to think and speak spontaneously in English is a daunting concept for a lot of students.

However, many candidates are wasting precious mental efforts in the wrong areas, and decreasing their scores at the same time.

3 Things to Not Worry About

Using a lot of linking words in Speaking Part 1

Part 1 is informal. Do not use formal linking words such as therefore or moreover.

This is inappropriate and will poorly affect your score.

A more natural approach is using informal fillers, such as you know, and conjunctions (and, or, yet, but, for, nor, so).

Having a perfectly organized Speaking Part 2

It is natural to wander a bit while speaking spontaneously. This is native and acceptable.

Say something like, as a side note…

It is impossible to perfectly organize your answer, including a conclusion, on the spot, in 2 minutes.

You want to be mid-sentence or mid-story when the examiner stops you, because this proves fluency.

Giving complex ideas in Speaking Part 3

When students try to give very high-minded ideas, the communication often ends up being unclear.

This detracts from the Fluency and Coherence score. It’s difficult to come up with super complex ideas immediately, and it is not expected.

Talk about the first idea that comes to mind, even if it is a personal example.

Read and listen widely so you have a lot of ideas at the ready.

The most important thing is to provide specific details!
