Today we’ll correct 3 bad IELTS tips from tutors students have received, and tell you the truth about the exam.

Not all teachers know about IELTS, and that means that you can’t study for the exam with just anyone.

You need a good teacher who knows the test intimately, and knows how you can increase your scores in specific ways.

Below are examples of bad advice students have gotten about the exam, and the truth as related to IELTS.

1. Don’t use advanced grammar in IELTS Writing

That’s ridiculous!

If you only use simple sentences, you’ll get a 4 for Grammar.

You must use a mixture of compound, complex and simple sentences to get a 6 or higher for Grammar.

2. Don’t memorize templates- it will lower your score

Also, ridiculous.

You have to learn an outline for an academic essay.

You need to know where to put certain sentences, like thesis statements and topic sentences, and how to link your ideas with transition phrases.

Even native speakers learn to write essays this way.

It’s not ‘memorizing’, as such. It is simply learning how to write a clear, well-constructed composition.

3. You must mirror the grammar of the Speaking question

This is a weird one!

A tutor told a student that she had to answer like this:

Are you a student? Yes I am.

Do you like to exercise? Yes I do.

That’s not necessarily wrong, but it certainly won’t increase your score. It’s not super important to do that.

Instead, try answering more naturally, like this:

Are you a student? Yeah, I go to Pacific State University.

Do you like to exercise? Oh, yeah, fanatically.

So, be careful of who, and where, you get your IELTS advice from!
