Funny:

This word has a few different meanings. At your level, it’s time to start using this word in new ways that are more common for native speakers.

  • Meaning 1: Haha, laughter, something humorous
  • Meaning 2: Strange, odd, something that is off, not quite right, gut feeling is wrong, bad, something is missing, a mismatch, something doesn’t line up

 

Situations where we might use “funny” in the Meaning #2: 

1) Investigating a murder/disappearance:

  • A: She always leaves her purse and her extra shoes at work but last night she didn’t leave anything behind
  • B: Hmm that’s kind of funny

2) Finding a Mistake: My credit card charged me an extra ten dollars for that dinner last week. That’s funny. I better give them a call.
